Turning 65?
Turning 65 Soon? Here’s What to Do
If you’re approaching 65, there are generally two paths:
1. Enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B
If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits at least 4 months before turning 65, you’ll generally be enrolled automatically in Parts A & B.
If you’re not receiving Social Security yet, you need to enroll manually. The easiest way is through Social Security’s online Medicare application.
2. Delay Medicare Part B
If you or your spouse are still actively working and you’re covered by an employer group health plan, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty and enroll later using a Special Enrollment Period.
Important: If you contribute to an HSA, Medicare enrollment requires additional planning because you can no longer contribute once Medicare coverage begins.
